3 Reasons Why Mother’s Day Sucks

If you had a good Mother’s Day, good for you. However, some people really struggle with this holiday. There are many reasons why this holiday can trigger negative feelings for some.

1. You hate your Mother or child
Ok, maybe you don’t hate your mother or child, but your relationship is strained in some way. This can leave you feeling guilty for how you feel when you see everyone on the planet having such a good time. You may not even want to see or spend time with them on that day. There are so many families that have falling outs it is not uncommon.

2. Your Mother is dead
Grief is this crazy thing. We can feel like we have moved on until something like Mother's Day comes along to remind us of those we have lost. Whether you lost your Mother last month or 10 years ago the pain of not having them here on this day can bring back the same feelings of grief all over again. The sucky thing about emotions is that we can recall them as if they are occurring at the moment.

3. You’re having trouble or can’t have kids. Lost a child in utero or anytime after they were born
Here's grief again to ruin the day, except this time it brought its friend shame along for the ride. Not only do you have to be reminded that you are having trouble or can't have a child, but you also have to deal with possible feelings of inadequacy. You may wonder if something is wrong with you. People wonder why you aren't enjoying yourself but they don't know you've had 2 miscarriages or a fight with your partner about what to do if biological children are not an option.

This by no means encompasses all the reasons why this day may suck. If you are someone that struggles with Mother's Day here are some ways to deal with it next year. Plan ahead, if you have an inkling that you might struggle that day come up with a survival plan. You know you best. Cater to what you know you need and set yourself up for success. Be kind to yourself. If you and your Mother or child are on the outs, beating yourself up doesn't make it any better. Try avoiding social media. Take a break from scrolling and enjoy something you like to do live. I hope this helps for those who had a hard time getting through Sunday. You are not alone. Here comes the shameless plug, wait for it, prepare yourself... talk to your Therapist. If you don't have one I can give you a referral. I know many therapists with this specialty.

I hope my blogs are a helpful source of information. That they might help you to find comfort and solace in knowing that you’re not alone. That you matter and someone’s thinking about you.
