Facing Your Numbers:
It's easy to blame everything around you for your financial situation, but facing your fear and taking responsibility can shift your mindset to evolve into a more mature and emotionally intelligent individual who can grow your income.
"Instead of getting discouraged and putting your head in the sand, facing what's in front of you and finding support will be the biggest game changer in your journey."
Leaky Boat:
There are two types of holes in your financial boat: not making enough money or not managing your money appropriately. These are holding you back from hitting your goals.
"You want to think about which of the two problems you have, if not both, and how you can mitigate some of the fallout. Support can be one of the quickest ways to save your boat."
Shame:
There is an unspoken embarrassment around not having much to show for the time, energy, and money you spent earning your degree. Women and women of color especially find themselves struggling in this area, but it does not have to be this way.
"If you feel shame, embarrassment, or guilt around your financial situation, you're not alone. This is your sign that you can learn and grow the impact that you want to have in the world."
Sacrifice:
Negotiating worth in the marketplace can be scary, uncharted territory, often leading to underselling your services and not being paid what your skill is worth. Sacrificing your income for not knowing how to market value your skills is holding you back.
"I come from working in nonprofit and an industry that talks about needing to make sacrifices for the greater good, but I believe you should not have to sacrifice your livelihood or well-being."
Your Money Team:
If doing everything independently has gotten you to a fairly successful point in your journey, you may think the lonely road is the only path to financial success. This is not true. Remember to change with the seasons.
"What got you here will not get you there. Allow yourself to be supported and receive the gift of insight and advice from the right sources."
Try This Exercise:
Get a piece of paper. Fold it in half and/or draw a line down the middle. On one side will be the Broke Life, and the other will be the Financially Free Life.
On the Broke Life side, write down everything that accompanies that version of yourself; on the Financially Free Life side, write down everything that accompanies the abundant version of yourself. These things can include thoughts, feelings, habits, actions, people, places, anything. In doing this, you will see what you need to let go of and what you need to start embracing. This will be the quickest way to start making changes starting today.
